The figure was cut by a third yesterday for the number of people expected to be repossessed by their lenders. The Council of Mortgage Lenders anticipates approximately 48,000 properties to be handed back to lenders after the effects of the low interest rate and government support helped individuals to continue owing their homes.

The figure is well down on the original prediction of 75,000 but would still be the highest number since 1995.

The revised forecast came as the CML released figures showing the number of people who had their homes repossessed rose by only three per cent during the third quarter of the year, despite rising unemployment.

The number of homes repossessed during the period was 11,700 which was higher than the previous three months (11,400), but lower than the first quarter which accounted for 12,700 homes.

There was also a fall in the number of people who fell behind with their mortgage repayments.

About 194,600 people were in arrears of at least 2.Down from a figure of 204,200 by the end of June, representing approximately 5% of their mortgage.

The number of houses being built has fallen, creating a slow increase in the supply to those waiting. The result is that house prices will be influenced by the changes in demand for new houses. A small rise in demand will cause a significant rise in price.
